There is something God has placed inside of you. A pull. A burning desire toward something you cannot fully explain. This is a look at what it means to recognize that call, trust it, and take the step even when it feels terrifying.

What Does It Feel Like When God Calls You to Something?

It does not always come with a loud voice or a dramatic sign. Sometimes it looks like a flyer on a bulletin board. Sometimes it is a book that makes you cry alone in your room. Sometimes it is just a quiet, undeniable sense that you need to do something, and if you do not, you will miss out on what God has for you.

That is exactly how it started. At 20 years old, away from home for the first time, a simple advertisement for a summer ministry internship in Brooklyn, New York sparked something that could not be ignored. Not because of a deep theological understanding of obedience at the time, but because the heart was being drawn somewhere, and walking away from it felt impossible.

You Do Not Have to Have It All Figured Out to Answer the Call

One of the most honest and encouraging truths about stepping into what God has for you is this: you do not need to have everything together first. At 20, with no ministry experience, no idea what to say, and no real understanding of what was ahead, the step was still taken.

The first cab driver in New York refused to go to Bushwick, Brooklyn. So did the second. But instead of arguing or giving up, the only response was prayer. Sitting in silence, trusting God. And the cab driver drove anyway.

That moment is a picture of what faith looks like in real life. You do not always have the words. You do not always have the plan. But you pray, you stay, and God moves.

What Happens When You Step Out in Faith

The most pivotal moment of that summer in New York came unexpectedly. In the middle of an outdoor ministry service in the projects, a microphone was handed over with two words: “You’re up.”

There was no preparation. No outline. Just fear and a prayer that said, “God, I need you right now.”

And then something happened. The words came. The moment was both terrifying and exhilarating. And when it was over, the thought was clear: I want to do this for the rest of my life. This is what I was created to do.

That is what obedience to God’s call feels like. It is not always comfortable. But it is always clarifying.

God Has Fashioned You for a Purpose

Scripture reminds us that we are not here by accident. God does not create people without intention. As Ephesians 2:10 says:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10 English Standard Version (ESV)

You are His workmanship. He has prepared something for you to walk in. The question is not whether the call exists. The question is whether you will answer it.

Your Call Will Look Different From Everyone Else’s

The call to ministry looked like sidewalk Sunday school in Brooklyn. For you, it might look completely different. It might be leading a small group, starting a conversation with a neighbor, writing, teaching, serving, or something no one else has done quite the way you will do it.

God does not need everyone doing the same thing. He needs every part of the body doing its part. As 1 Corinthians 12:27 says:

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:27 English Standard Version (ESV)

He is saying to you, to the person next to you, and to every believer: I need you. Come and do your part.

Do Not Let Anything Get in the Way of What God Has Put in Your Heart

Fear will show up. Doubt will show up. Circumstances will push back, just like those cab drivers who refused to go where they were needed. But God is faithful to move things when you stay committed to where He is leading you.

The call does not require perfection. It does not require experience. It does not even require that you feel ready. It requires that you trust the One who placed the desire in your heart in the first place.

Do not wait until everything is polished. Sometimes God says, “Start now.” Even in your pajamas. Even before you feel prepared. Just start.

Life Application

This week, take one concrete step toward something God has been placing on your heart. It does not have to be big. It might be making a phone call, signing up to serve, writing down what you feel called to, or simply praying and telling God you are willing. The goal is movement, not perfection.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

• Is there something God has been nudging me toward that I have been putting off out of fear or uncertainty?
• What would it look like to take one small step of obedience this week, even if I do not feel fully ready?
• Am I trusting God with the outcome, or am I waiting until I feel in control before I move?
• God has fashioned you for a purpose. The call is real. The grace to answer it is already there. Take the microphone. Open your mouth. Trust Him with what comes next.
