Freedom is one of the most beautiful things we can witness in another person. When someone is fully themselves, unashamed and unhindered, there is something deeply compelling about it. That kind of freedom is not just a personality trait. It is actually God’s desire for every one of us.
What Does True Freedom Look Like?
Picture a little girl in a twirly dress, spinning in the backyard without a care in the world. No shame. No embarrassment. No sense of unworthiness. Just pure, joyful freedom.
That image captures something real about what God intends for His people. It is not just a sweet childhood moment. It is a picture of what life looks like when we are living exactly as we were created to live.
Why Did Jesus Come to Earth?
One of the clearest statements Jesus ever made about His own mission is found in Luke chapter four. He returned to His hometown of Nazareth, stood up in the synagogue, and read from the scroll of Isaiah:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” – Luke 4:18 English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus did not come simply to give us a set of rules to follow. He came to set captives free. He came to bring liberty to those who are oppressed. That is His mission, and it is deeply personal.
Free from the Law: Why Rules Alone Were Never Enough
God always knew that the law, on its own, could never fully restore us. In Galatians, Paul describes the law as a tutor, something that points us toward our need for Christ rather than something that saves us in itself.
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” – Galatians 3:13 English Standard Version (ESV)
This is a profound truth. Jesus did not just teach us how to do better. He took on the curse that the law placed on us and absorbed it completely. He freed us from the impossible weight of trying to earn our way to God through perfect performance.
That means we are no longer living under the crushing expectations of others or even of ourselves. The pressure to be perfect has been lifted because Christ fulfilled what we never could.
Free from Sin: More Than Just Forgiveness
What Christ accomplished on the cross goes even deeper than forgiveness. Yes, He paid the penalty for sin, which was death. But He also broke the power that sin holds over our daily lives.
Sin creates footholds. It shackles us. It keeps us from being who we were made to be. But the victory Christ won over sin is not just His victory. It is ours as well.
We do not have to keep living under the oppression of the same patterns, the same shame, the same cycles. Christ has already won that battle, and He invites us to walk in that freedom.
When Are We Most Beautiful?
There is something worth sitting with here. We are never more fully ourselves than when we are living free. Not performing. Not striving. Not hiding. Just living as the people God designed us to be, unhindered and unashamed in His presence.
That is what beauty really is. It is not about appearance or achievement. It is about a person who is fully alive in who God made them to be.
How Do We Run the Race God Has Set Before Us?
The writer of Hebrews gives us a clear picture of what this looks like in practice:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” – Hebrews 12:1-2 English Standard Version (ESV)
Running with endurance is only possible when we are willing to lay aside the things that weigh us down. Every burden. Every sin. Every distraction that pulls our eyes away from Jesus.
When we fix our eyes on Him, we can run. Not perfectly, but freely. And that is the goal.
What Would Your Life Look Like If You Were Truly Free?
Take a moment and actually imagine it. What would your life look like if you were simply who God created you to be? No shame holding you back. No sin keeping you at a distance from Him. No weight dragging you down.
Just you, freely enjoying the presence of your Father.
That is not a fantasy. That is the life Christ died to give you.
Life Application
This week, identify one specific weight or area of shame that has been keeping you from living freely in your relationship with God. It might be a sin you keep returning to, a lie you believe about yourself, or an expectation you have been trying to meet on your own. Bring it honestly before God in prayer, and ask Him to help you lay it down. Then take one practical step toward walking in the freedom He has already provided for you through Christ.
As you reflect, consider these questions:
- What does it look like in my daily life to live as someone who has truly been set free by Christ?
- Is there a weight or a sin I have been carrying that I have not yet surrendered to God?
- Am I fixing my eyes on Jesus, or am I focused on my own performance and the expectations of others?
- What would change in my relationships, my habits, and my sense of identity if I fully believed that Christ has already won my freedom?
